Overview

What is citation cleanup, and why does it move local rankings?

Citation cleanup is the process of finding every online listing of your business and making sure the Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) on each one matches exactly. That means correcting wrong details, removing or merging duplicates, and updating listings left behind after a move, a rebrand, or a phone change.

Google cross-checks your business details across the web to decide whether you are real, trustworthy, and located where you say you are. When those details conflict, that trust drops, and so can your spot in the local pack and on Google Maps. Duplicates also split reviews and ranking signals between listings that should be one.

Cleanup is also the step most providers skip. Building new citations on top of messy data spreads the mess further. Fix the foundation first, and every citation you add afterward works harder.

One business, one name, one address, one phone number, everywhere it appears. That is the whole goal.
What We Fix

The citation problems we find and correct

Most businesses have more of these than they think, usually on sites they have never logged into.

Wrong or Old Addresses

Listings still showing a previous location, a bad suite number, or a formatting mismatch.

Outdated Phone Numbers

Disconnected lines, tracking numbers, and old numbers that send callers nowhere.

Duplicate Listings

Two or more profiles for the same business, splitting reviews and ranking signals.

Name Variations

“Co.” vs “Company”, old brand names, and keyword-stuffed names that break consistency.

Closed or Moved Locations

Listings marking you closed, or pinning a location you left years ago.

Wrong Website URLs

Dead domains, http links, and pages that no longer exist on your site.

Unclaimed Listings

Auto-generated profiles anyone can edit, which we claim where the platform allows.

Aggregator Errors

Bad data at the source that keeps re-spreading to dozens of smaller directories.
Methodology

How our citation cleanup works

A manual, step-by-step process. No automated “sync” tool that reverts your listings the day you cancel.
01

Set Your Master NAP

We confirm the one correct version of your name, address, phone, and website, matched to your Google Business Profile.
02

Full Citation Audit

We search major directories, aggregators, and niche and local sites to find every existing listing, including ones you never created.
03

Flag & Prioritize

Every mismatch, duplicate, and outdated listing is logged, then ranked by authority so the most influential fixes happen first.
04

Claim & Correct

We claim or access each listing and update the details by hand, adding hours, categories, and descriptions where they are missing.
05

Remove Duplicates

Duplicate profiles are merged, suppressed, or submitted for removal, following each platform’s own process.
06

Verify & Report

We recheck every change and deliver a before-and-after report with live URLs, status, and any login details we created.

Everything you need to see what was wrong, what we changed, and where your listings stand now.
Who It's For

When your business needs citation cleanup

You Moved Locations

Your old address lives on in dozens of directories and keeps feeding Google the wrong pin.

You Rebranded or Changed Your Phone

A new name or number only helps once the old versions stop competing with it.

Rankings Stalled or Dropped

Conflicting NAP data is one of the first things to rule out when map rankings slip.

You Have Duplicate Profiles

Reviews and authority split across listings that should be one strong profile.

You're About to Build Citations

Clean first, then build, so new citations reinforce one correct record instead of three.

You're an Agency

Hand off cleanup for your clients with a white-label report under your own brand.

FAQ

Citation cleanup questions, answered

Citation cleanup means finding every online listing of your business and making the name, address, phone number, and website match exactly. It includes correcting wrong details, removing or merging duplicate listings, and updating listings that are out of date.

Yes. Consistent business information helps Google trust that your business is legitimate and located where you say it is. Inconsistent or duplicate listings weaken that trust and split ranking signals, which can hold you back in the local pack and on Google Maps.

Standalone cleanup is $59 per 50 directories, paid once. Cleanup is also included in our Growth and Elite citation packages. See all options on our pricing page.

It depends on how many listings need work and how quickly each directory processes changes. We share an estimated timeline with your free audit. Some platforms update within days, while others need a verification step or review period before changes go live.

Most can, but a few directories require owner verification by phone or mail, or simply do not allow edits or removals. When that happens, we document it in your report and tell you exactly what is needed to finish it.

Ideally, yes. Building new citations on top of conflicting data spreads the inconsistency further. Cleaning first means every new citation we build reinforces one correct record.

No. We make changes directly on each listing instead of through a subscription sync tool, so corrections stay in place. Cleanup is a one-time payment.

Yes. Agencies can order cleanup for their clients and receive a branded report with no mention of us. Learn more on our white-label page.
